On the heels of Saturday's 3-2 victory in Miami, Honduras won the second match of their series against Guatemala 2-1 in Atlanta. According to press reports, the Hondurans played their possession game very well and were superior in all phases of the game to the Guatemalan side. Their advantage remained even after they were reduced to ten men (the Honduran 'keeper Puerto handled outside the area).
Guatemala still have not won in four matches under new manager Hernán Darío Gómez. Only the exploits of Marquense in the UNCAF have been the exception to what has been a disappointing period for Guatemalan football. This excerpt of a recent commentary by Carlos Muralles of guatefutbol.com expresses some of the frustration with the current situation:
Hernán Darío Gómez nos advirtió que nos preparáramos para sufrir y que en este año no le ganaríamos a nadie, pero, aunque terminen siendo ciertos esos presagios, nos agradaría ver al menos algún signo de evolución positiva y por el momento nos cuesta encontrarlo.
Hernán Darío Gómez warned us to prepare to suffer and that we may not beat anyone this year, but, although those predictions might be true, it would be nice for us to see at least some sign of positive evolution and for the moment it's hard to see one. [My translation]
From the Honduran side, the question is who will the national team play during the next open date in November. The hope is that they play someone other than Guatemala.
