Juan Sebastián Verón was so close to accepting an offer to play for DC United, yet declined to lead his boyhood club (and his father's club) Estudiantes La Plata in this year's Copa Libertadores. The BBC's Tim Vickery in his latest weekly commentary on South American football gives a good indication of how strong a pull the Copa Libertadores has on the players down there.
I would imagine that in addition to the money, the opportunity to play the Libertadores is a big reason so many South American players have moved to the Mexican league. Marcelo Gallardo's move to MLS is all the more remarkable in this case, although he had already won a Libertadores in 1996 with River Plate.
