CONCACAF's amendment to the Central American qualification criteria for the Champions League is a welcome improvement. Granted, CONCACAF had to start somewhere when it came to deciding which team would obtain the berth to the Group Stage, but in the end a separate two-match playoff proved unwieldy and difficult to schedule. Now, if separate teams win both short tournaments in a season, the Group Stage berth (or Preliminary Round berth in the case of Belize and Nicaragua) is decided by the following:
- Total points in domestic season (excluding playoffs)
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
