Edwin Jusino of the Fútbol Boricua blog has sent me his latest version of the CFU Club Rankings that he has developed in recent months. He describes it as follows:
The club rankings list uses a formula that takes into consideration past and present achievements of the different clubs. The base of the equation is based on the appearances of each club on the international competitions, and of their national championships. Teams that at the moment of the creation of this list were not in the top levels of their country were not taken into consideration. Teams that were relegated after the creation of this list are not taken out of it. Due to the recommendations of and constructive criticism of knowledgeable persons the formula was altered slightly. This alteration made some teams climb and other descend. The base points are as follow:
CFU Champions Cup- 20
- National Championships- 15
- CONCACAF Champions Cup- 5
- CONCACAF Champions League – 30
The above numbers are the base points of the formula. They take into consideration appearances in the international competitions, and the claimed national championships. The champions of the CFU Champions Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, and the individual progress in the Champions League receive bonus points, due to the difficulty of the competitions of acquiring the titles or passing from round to round in the Champions League. The Champions Cup stages are no longer taken into consideration since the Champions Cup was replaces [sic] by the Champions League, and therefore they give no bonuses.
Edwin's list counts only appearances (as opposed to points won) in the competitions, as well as domestic championships won. It's too long to reproduce here and he could use the hits to his site, so here's the link. I need to look at the history of the local Caribbean leagues, but at first glance the ranking appears to be skewed toward clubs in the minor Caribbean countries that are dominant locally and non-factors regionally.
Thanks for the link! by the way, commenting on your analysis. Yes for now the list might be skewed towards the lesser Antilles, but as time progresses I see a change in that. As more and more teams compete in the CFU Club Championship and progress through the champions League Stages, those teams, mainly from Jamaica, Haiti, T&T, and Puerto Rico will eventually be the dominant names in the top ten. Remember teams might have a history in the region, but... if they have been unable to acquire National Championships or refrain from participating in the CFU Club Championship they will eventually be passed by the more active teams.
