Sorry for being so late, but it was a long day at work. One of those days...
Anyway, the first leg matches of the quarterfinal round conclude tonight with the match between Marathón and the Puerto Rico Islanders. I'll be able to liveblog the second half.
Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 Marathón F
A fine second-half performance by the Islanders allows them to come back and secure a home leg victory over a very good Marathón side. Only fitting that a Caribbean club would get its goals from two Caribbeans. However, that away goal could be decisive; Marathón only need to win 1-0 in San Pedro Sula to go through.
Thanks for following the first leg matches of the CCL this week. There will be some very dramatic return leg matches next week, and I hope to see you then.
1958: FULL TIME Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 Marathón
1957: Three minutes into stoppage time...can't be more than a minute left.
1956: Hansen, off the throw-in, tries a shot with a scissors kick but it flies over. Close to the end now.
1954: Into stoppage time.
1950: A huge opportunity for Puerto Rico as a ball from the right finds Hansen in the box, but a Marathón defender (didn't get his name, sorry) makes a risky tackle from behind to concede a corner. Looking at the replay that could have been called a penalty.
1948: Despite the dangerous counterattacking from the Honduran side, Puerto Rico have been the dominant side in the second half. One more goal would give them a strong advantage in the second leg.
1945: GOAL Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 Marathón (82')
And what a goal!! Kendall Jagdeosingh receives the ball from Addlery on the left -- I thought he was offside but the Marathón defender kept him on -- dribbles toward the edge of the penalty area, and uncorks a laser that goes into the far side netting.
1943: Ten minutes to go...still lots of time. Marathón will bring on Sosa for Berrios.
1940: Marathón still have the upper hand in the tie, but there's plenty of time and Puerto Rico are generating chances. Now Hansen comes on for Villegas in the Islanders' lineup.
1938: GOAL Puerto Rico Islanders 1-1 Marathón (75')
The Islanders come back with a counterattack of their own! Steele receives the ball in the middle, moves a few yards upfield, and lofts a delicate ball into the area where Nicholas Addlery meets the ball before Obelar, and it goes into the net.
1936: Islanders come close again -- whipped in cross from the left, and Addlery's header zips wide of the near post.
1934: Puerto Rico are playing better in attack and have been able to create three chances on goal in the last ten minutes. But Marathón's counters are deadly.
1927: Free kick to Puerto Rico, outside the Marathón area. Jonathan Steele takes it, and the ball takes a wicked deflection off the wall, but it falls past the far post for a corner. The corner is blocked away and the Green Monsters counter through Chávez.
1925: Jagdeosingh nearly had an immediate impact, but Marathón respond with a quick corner and Chávez on the right forces another fingertip save by Gaudette.
1923: Colin Clarke is going to make a tactical substitution, as Jagdeosingh comes on for Núñez.
1921: No team has been able to successfully cope with Marathón's pace in the Champions League. That near goal was a huge example.
1919: What a header by Marathón! And near disaster for the Islanders! It was a counter, great cross by Bonilla and a tremendous header by Saúl Martínez. But Gaudette tips the ball onto the inside of the far post, and it bounces back into his hands!
1915: Marathón are now putting seven or eight players behind the ball in defense, which you might expect at this stage of the tie.
1914: Marathón's a good team, but my goodness, those away shirts are uggggly.
1912: Second half is underway. Actually, it started three minutes ago.
1902: Yup. It was Jerry Palacios in the 42nd minute.
1900: Sounds like Marathón scored their goal near the end of the first half. It's a big result for them since it will force the Islanders to take the offensive in the return leg in San Pedro Sula.
