I'm behind on several posts from late last week, but more has to be said about the expulsion of Guadalajara's Héctor Reynoso from this year's Copa Libertadores. It's unfortunate that Guadalajara and San Luís had to play the final matches of the group stage under the fears of the swine flu outbreak, and the Chilean handling of Chivas' presence in the country was quite over the top, but nothing excuses what Reynoso did during the match. To spit and cough at an opposing player, at a time when there is no small amount of fear about a potentially life-threatening disease, is not at all funny and is incredibly stupid. What should have been a big achievement has been overshadowed by Reynoso's stupidity.
Chivas are almost certain to appeal the decision, of course, and some of the Chivas players are demanding that the Chileans receive a similar sanction from CONMEBOL for the less than courteous treatment given the Mexican side. I think that Everton's elimination from the group stage, in a match that they had to win, is punishment enough.
