Monterrey are the champions of the Mexican Apertura 2009 after defeating Cruz Azul 2-1 away to complete a wild 6-4 aggregate win (the first leg of the final finished 4-3 in Monterrey a few days ago). This is the third time that Cruz Azul have advanced to the final in the last four tournaments, and it's also the third time that they have fallen short at the last hurdle. Cruz Azul are going to get a lot of comparisons to the Buffalo Bills for that record, but there are a lot of clubs that would give anything just to get to one final, let alone three in a row.
This is the third championship for Monterrey, and perhaps the most emotional one. Aldo de Nigris, with his brother always on his thoughts, was one of the key players for Los Rayados during the playoffs and scored the opener tonight. Humberto Suazo, the temperamental and brilliant Chilean striker, scored the second.
