The Atlanta MLS organization announced the name and colors of the team at a gathering of over 4,000 attendees in Midtown on Monday night. The new club name is Atlanta United Football Club.
I was hoping for a name that played off the phoenix bird that makes up the city seal, but as a co-worker told me, it would only cause confusion if/when a Phoenix team enters MLS. And as a Georgia Tech alumnus, the thought of having a red-and-black scarf in my home makes me throw up a little in my mouth, but unless the alternative nickname became "Bulldogs" I guess I can live with it.
I guess the name will grow on me over time, like Sporting Kansas City did, but right now I'm merely underwhelmed. I'll just observe how Major League Soccer has evolved from nicknames imposed in the team name, like other US pro sports teams, to naming conventions common to the sport with nicknames developed organically by the fans.
